Harry Chapin, Flowers are Red

Recorded August 19th, 1980 at Hamilton Place, Hamilton, ONT. Harry would die 11 months later. My understanding is that this was his last recorded concert. Flowers are Red The little boy went first day of school He got some crayons and started to draw He put colors all over the paper For colors was what he saw And the teacher said.. What you doin’ young man I’m paintin’ flowers he said She said… It’s not the time for art young man And anyway flowers are green and red There’s a time for everything young man And a way it should be done You’ve got to show concern for everyone else For you’re not the only one And she said… Flowers are red young man Green leaves are green There’s no need to see flowers any other way Than they way they always have been seen But the little boy said… There are so many colors in the rainbow So many colors in the morning sun So many colors in the flower and I see every one Well the teacher said.. You’re sassy There’s ways that things should be And you’ll paint flowers the way they are So repeat after me….. And she said… Flowers are red young man Green leaves are green There’s no need to see flowers any other way Than they way they always have been seen But the little boy said… There are so many colors in the rainbow So many colors in the morning sun So many colors in the flower and I see every one The teacher put him in a corner She said.. It’s for your own good.. And you won’t come out ’til you get it right And are responding like you …

I think this song is one of the reasons I swore to myself I would be a better Dad than mine was. I buried myself in my kid’s lives. I hope they have better memories than I do? My daughter is in college learning to become a teacher. I played this song for her. She loved it. I told her they should make new teachers, and old, listen to this song.
@lakelandchief yeah he does, its on youtube….
Why did the pianist make the hand movement at 3:23???
@misshellcat750
are you kidding? i think our govt needs to hear this! teach them a thing or two!
but yes unfortunately the more things change the more they stay the same :(
A Six Pack, a Couch, and my now Husband—Our First date—Thanks Harry!
You Will Never Be Forgotten!
@lakelandchief I don’t believe so.
Does he do “Sniper” in this show?
r.i.p. harry – i miss the days when people would write songs and play actual instraments and sound good live. todays music is junk?!
Great video, Bravo thanks for posting this ;)
As an art teacher, I have used this song many times when I go and teach teachers what it is that we do! We don’t teach art…we teach CHILDREN!!! We use art to teach them to be creative, unique individuals! Our job is? to remind the world that art is an expression of one’s self and it documents our cultures, eras, etc… Harry Chapin continues to be my hero and my mentor!
A brilliant and very intelligent song, perfomed by a great artist
The teacher in this song is exactly the same as my art teacher.
This song destroys me. It’s true – not just in school. We live in a country that brags about individual liberty and freedom and then kicks everyone in the b***s if they don’t look and talk and act like everyone else. After a while we stop trying.
Listened to it in English class yesterday
Harry we miss you.
Harry was SO awesome!! Thanks.
I find this song to be an inspiration because not all schools operate this way. I know of a principal who played it at the first meeting of his teachers and every teacher who didn’t get the point was gone.
Hate the song….love the lyrics
:( This is such a morbidly depressing song…
Wonderful clip; thanks for sharing.
I was lucky enough to see Harry in concert on two separate occasions. Each time he brought down the house.
29 years later and education still works the same (wrong) way. It’s sad……….
i first heard this song at camp this summer and it soon became one of my favorites, everytime i hear it i think of the fantastic memories created this past summer
Harry miss you all thse years later and still listen to Dance Band On The Titanic and the music is still great.
Take care Harry wherever you may be hope you are still preforming and rocking heaven like only you possibly could.
I don’t like that how he turned such a sad song into something happy.
You’re welcome.
