My sister-in-law makes gift baskets of soap and other hygiene products. She uses products from companies such as Caswell-Massey, Lord & Mayfair, Judith Jackson Spa, Davies Gate and ProTerra. Most of these products come in retail sizes as well as hotel/spa amenities sizes.

When buying amenities sizes, you are talking large quantities, like 288 little bottles of shampoo. She uses only “luxury” lines and probably has a good $4,000 worth of inventory on hand.
No matter what you sell, be prepared to buy in large quantities. For these personal care products, she generally doubles her cost, give or take 10%. Most people use this sort of item. It doesn’t spoil.

Forget that bulk buying in large quantities stuff! Do this:

1) See what people WANT. Visit local flea markets and gift type stores, flower shops, etc. and see what sells. head to Amazon.com, eBay and other places that have Search boxes and see which are the popular items turning up that actually sell.

2) Target your products to your marketplace and work within your budget. Drop ship, if necessary, to get your feet wet, even though you may earn less.

3) Get library books on this topic and dig in! Seek help form the SBA (small biz assoc.) at SBA.gov, too. It’s a business, after all.

Above all; do NOT jump in and order a BUNCH of inventory right off. NO!!

Best wishes for your success :)

You don’t need to buy in HUGE quantities. Just go to your local Sam’s Club or Costco (or whatever is in your area) and buy the large packs of snacks. (i.e. Gardetto’s, Sun Chips, Turtles chocolate truffles) Anything that is fairly nice looking and not too cheezy. We also got some more fancier things to dress up our baskets at the local World Market. Here’s a secret: a wicker laundry basket only costs a few dollars and looks fancier than it sounds and no one has to know that it’s a laundry basket. Also, shredded construction paper can dress up a boring basket.

To be honest i have been doing this type of business myself for a couple of months now but i am still learning, there is always a way to make things better but i have to tell you about a website i have found that explains everything you will ever need to know from buying stock to selling your baskets this is the only site you will need and it is all explained to you in easy to follow instructions.
